Safe electronic systems: arrived in the future with AI
gate-Startup CELUS takes part in research project for AI-based development of electronic systems
The Federal Ministry of Economics and Energy supports the AI-based development of electronic systems and, thus, sets the course for the future.
The Federal Ministry of Economics and Energy (BMWi) supports German AI-research for the development of safe, innovative electronic systems for future automotive generations by 11.2 Mio. Euros. edacentrum together with Bosch Multimedia Car Gmbh take over the project management of a consortium consisting of eighteen high-carate partners. edacentrum is the network for electronics, design and applications in economy and science.
The aim of the project started on April 1st, 2021, is the development of a generalized AI-based desgin process for electronic systems in vehicles.
Due to the considerably accumulating system complexity on the way to autonomous and electrically driven vehicles, the application of AI methods is necessarily needed in order to support and automate design processes for future electronic systems in vehicles in an optimum way. By the use of AI, functionally safe electronic systems could be developed faster, more reliably and more cost efficiently. High-power and sustainable electronic systems are a critical success factor for future mobility.
Furthermore, the project participants expect a distinct acceleration of the present innovation cycles. Thus, progressiveAI underlines the paradigm shift which AI heralds for this century.
The technical management of the auspicious project is taken over by the designated and long-standing expert Dr. Michael Kühn on the part of Robert Bosch Car Multimedia GmbH. He is the team leader of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) at the Bosch subsidiary. Earlier, Kühn had, amongst others, worked with Audi, where he established the basic research and pre-development in EMC and, besides this, significantly promoted the topic virtual development. Dr. Kühn comments:“ The use of AI in the design process of electronic vehicle components will significantly raise efficiency, e.g. the review efforts of circuit diagrams and layout data may be considerably reduced by pre-trained AI-modules using simulation data. ProgressiveAI is based on a highly competent consortium over industry, research institutes and universities, which covers the complete value-added chain for the desgin of electronic systems. Within the framework of the 3-year project runtime, I expect a considerable surpluss profit by AI within the design process of vehicle components.“
The project management is taken by edacentrum, lead-managed by Dr.-Ing. Werner John. He states: ”With progressiveAI a modular AI-platform will be developed which is flexibly applicable via safe, encoded and intelligent connectors to the single (distributed) AI-modules. A connection to GAIA-X will be realized as well. Thus, the usage of AI-supported eda-methods in the development of electronic systems in Germany is empowered and accelerated as well as today’s design processes are made more efficient. For the first time in the range of eda, the involvement of applied research institutes and universities assure that the quality of training and learning processes of the applied AI-methods can be reliably assessed and made safe. Young academics, thereby, have an excellent opportunity to exert influence on the future eda-AI-development in Germany. The project progressiveAI has the potential to become a flagship project when realizing AI-supported methods in the field of eda and to point out trend-setting industry-driven implementations.”
A project of this size benefits from the broad spectrum of the participants’ expertise, this is why not only big, well-established enterprises are involved, but also some promising pioneers of their domains, such as the two Munich-based companies CELUS and Luminovo. They, too, see the great potential of this project. Tobias Pohl, founder and CEO of gate-Startup CELUS, amends: „The future of electronics development is in the automation by artificial intelligence. The complexitiy is rapidly rising, and existing tools can no longer keep pace. This turns out to be a great challenge for the industry. Challenges which require a cooperation of the most important players in this market. This is exactly what turns progressiveAI the presumably most fascinating project in electronics industry. Together with our partners we will design the future of development processes.“
Timon Ruban, original member of the German AI-congress and founder of Luminovo, is confident as well regarding the start of the project :
“Every day, we work on accelerating technical progress, but only by collaboration of the entire industry, we will succeed in the long run. Therefore, we are especially motivated to be part of this project with so many top-class partners, and we are looking forward to bringing our profound knowledge of AI in order to jointly transform the development process of electronic systems.”
Under the direction of Robert Bosch Car Multimedia GmbH, the partners Infineon Technologies, Zuken, Microchip Technology Germany, Celus, Luminovo, Hood, Cloud&Heat Technologies, Binder Elektronik, DIQA Projektmanagement, EMC Test NRW, InnoZent OWL e.V. as well as the Fraunhofer institutions FIT/ENAS, FZI research center Informatics, TU Dortmund, HSU Hamburg, TU Berlin and HS Hamm-Lippstadt/System Integration Laboratory engage in the triannual undertaking and, thus, cover all necessary components of the value-added chain.

About edacentrum
edacentrum is an independent institution in support of research and development in the field of Electronic Design Automation (EDA). It was founded by leading German micro-electronic enterprises and sponsored during its work-up phase by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).
edacentrum initiates, surveys and accompanies industry-led and BMBF-sponsored EDA-F&E-projects and offers an extensive spectrum of services around EDA, especially a project management for R&D-projects. Furthermore, they support the bundling of existing EDA-competence in German research institutes by the stimulation of EDA-cluster research projects and EDA-networks, as well as by communication platforms for the EDA-community. Besides, edacentrum does public relations with the aim to make design automation as a central solution idea for the problem of complexity in micro electronics more transparent in higher company management levels, politics and in public.
