What is it like to found a unicorn? We asked Matthias this question when he sat down on the couch in our gate lounge, ready for his interview. He paused for a moment:
“It’s exciting. It’s a good testament of success. But I think a unicorn also creates new bars, and you have to think about what comes afterwards.”
For Matthias, the success of Synthesia, one of Europe’s leading generative AI companies, was only the beginning. His passion for generative AI research and the timing of rapid progress in 3D AI led him to start something new: SpAItial AI.

At SpAItial AI, the team is building spatial foundation models that can create virtual worlds resembling the real world in both look and behavior.
Some examples include:
- Gaming: A 10-year-old can type in some text and get their own video game.
- Film production: Generate 3D environments and assets for Hollywood-quality movies.
- Architecture: Take a picture of your apartment and instantly receive a virtual digital copy.
- Engineering & Manufacturing: Create models and assets for industrial use cases.
Unlike 2D image generators like DALL·E or Stable Diffusion, SpAItial AI can turn simple text prompts into explorable 3D worlds.

THE SPAITIAL AI TEAM AND ACHIEVEMENTS
Although SpAItial AI is still in its early building phase, the company already has a world-class team: top researchers and leads from Google and Meta who have worked on generative AI in 3D.
The next big milestone is to finalize the internal model and make it available to early partners. Discussions are already underway to design APIs and use cases for industries like design, gaming, and engineering.

ADVICE FOR FOUNDERS
Drawing from his journey with Synthesia and now SpAItial AI, Matthias offers advice for entrepreneurs:
“The biggest challenge for AI startups is the transition from research to product-market fit. Many people can build amazing prototypes, but turning them into products that millions use—that’s the hardest part.”

He stresses that the timing of founding is crucial
- Start when the technology is advanced enough to become practical, but still early enough that the market is not crowded.
- This was exactly the case with Synthesia in 2017: the research was promising, but large-scale applications were not yet possible. That gap created an opportunity.
Matthias also highlights the importance of having a secret sauce
- Be outstanding at one thing, much better than everyone else.
- For him, that “secret sauce” has always been deep technical expertise, developed through years of research at Stanford and TUM.
- His roadmap: do something deeply technical, gain unique expertise, and then translate that into a product.
“If you’re not the expert, or don’t have one on your founding team, it’s much harder to succeed—especially in AI. That’s why building a strong team around your core expertise is critical.”
Finally, he emphasizes the mindset
- Don’t cling to past success: every startup is a new game with new challenges.
- Focus on learning speed: the best founders adapt quickly when the market shifts.
- Think beyond the prototype: the biggest challenge for AI companies is making the transition from R&D to creating a real business out of it… finding the right product market fit especially for AI companies is very tricky. Fundraising, scaling, hiring, and customer trust are just as important as the technology itself.
In short, his advice is clear: Find your edge, build the right team, and be ready to reinvent yourself at every stage.
