Our gate-startup alqem is a German-Portuguese deep-tech startup discovering the materials that unlock technological progress. Most materials in use today were discovered decades ago, and entire industries still depend on materials that are scarce, constrained, or limited in what they can do. Alqem believes the materials that could change this remain largely undiscovered, and that AI now provides the tools to find them faster than ever before. The startup combines AI-driven prediction with synthesis and characterization conducted by its own team, so a material it predicts can also be made and measured, not just simulated. Alqem’s current focus is on permanent magnets, but the engine the startup is building reaches far beyond any single material. Its long-term mission is to build a company with a significant, positive impact on the world.
